Meet The 2006 U.S. Junior Quarterfinalists
William "Bud" Cauley, 16, Jacksonville, Fla., (2nd Junior Amateur)
Advanced to match play at the 2005 Junior Amateur…a home-schooled high school junior…has six holes-in-one to his credit, including three in tournament play…best score is 63 in 2004 in Venice, Fla., at Florida Junior Tour event…he has won two junior golf events – the Nike Golf Junior Championship and the Mizuno Junior at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga….he enjoys basketball, wakeboarding and going to the beach…his caddie is a friend and golf partner, Jack Bethmann…starting playing golf at age 6…born March 16, 1990 in Daytona, Fla. Goes by the nickname "Bud" because it is far less formal than William. Great grandfather was named Bud.
Philip Francis, 17, Scottsdale, Ariz. (3rd Junior Amateur)
Advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2005 Junior Amateur and the round of 16 in 2003…home-schooled but headed to UCLA to play college golf…has recorded seven holes-in-one…best score is 64 in the 2005 Western Junior…winner of the 2006 Rolex Tournament of Champions, Thunderbird Invitational, and the Heather Farr Classic…also won the 2005 Scott Robertson Memorial…two-time junior golf All-American…has dual citizenship in both the USA and Sweden…loves to surf, play basketball and work on his physical fitness…started in golf at age 2…born October 20, 1988 in Las Vegas, Nev., at 7:11 a.m. and his father owned 7/11 franchises.
Wesley Graham, 16, Port Orange, Fla. (1st Junior Amateur)
Has not traveled out of the state of Florida for competitive golf until this year…won the 2004 and 2005 Florida State Junior Championship (15-and-under, stroke play)…best score is 64 at Disney World in the Florida Team Championships….winner of the two Florida junior tour events – 2006 Rio Pinar and and 2005 Walt Disney World…runner-up at the Pre-Season Junior at Black Bear and the Florida junior tour at Southwind in 2006…likes to play basketball…started playing golf at age 7…born March 10, 1990 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Sihwan Kim 17, Buena Park, Calif. (3rd Junior Amateur)
2004 U.S. Junior Amateur champion at age 15…second-youngest winner behind Tiger Woods…advanced to the third round in 2005…holds an 11-1 mark in Junior Amateur match play…will be a senior at Sunny Hills HS this fall…quarterfinalist at the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links in Bremerton, Wash., two weeks ago…advanced to match play at the 2005 U.S. Public Links and the 2005 U.S. Amateur…best score is 64 at Mission Hills in June of 2005…All-American junior golfer…scored his first hole-in-one in February of this year…also includes the 2003 PING Phoenix, the Nike Golf Junior All-Star and 2005 Mission Hills Desert Junior among his victories…likes basketball, fishing and running…began playing golf at age 9…born December 4, 1988 in Seoul, Korea.
Danny Lee, 15, New Zealand (1st Junior Amateur)
Tried to qualify last year…finished T3 at the 2006 Junior Worlds at Torrey Pines last week…won the 2006 New Zealand Under 23 championship…three-putted the last hole in qualifying but still earned a berth…best score is 11-under-par in 2005…caddie is Rambert Sin, a friend of his father, who owns two California driving ranges…born July 24, 1990 in Incheon, Korea but lives in Rotorua, New Zealand with his parents, where he attends the Rotorua Boys Academy. Will be a senior this fall.
Richard Lee, 15, Chandler, Ariz. (1st Junior Amateur)
Played in the U.S. Amateur last year as a 14-year-old and shot 71-78 and missed the cut by three strokes but lists it as his most memorable golf experience…shot 62 in Canada in 2004…has one hole-in-one but he didn’t see it…won the 2006 Mirasol Junior……lists victories at Junior Worlds and Nike…runner-up at Heather Farr, Robert Trent Jones and Hiwan…qualified at Greyhawk in Arizona…will be a 10th grader at Laurel Springs School in Arizona in the fall…holds Canadian citizenship…likes basketball and soccer…born October 29, 1990 in Toronto, Ont., Canada.
Andrew Putnam, 17, Tacoma, Wash. (2nd Junior Amateur)
Played in the 2004 Junior Amateur but did not qualify for match play…caddie is Greg Bodine, his cousin…younger brother of Nationwide Tour pro and 2005 USA Walker Cupper Michael Putnam…lists victories at the 2005 Washington Junior Golf Association State championship, the 2006 Pacific Northwest Junior at Trophy Lake and the Washington State high school tournaments in 2004 and 2006…had a hole-in-one on his back nine to win the Washington State High School title as a freshman…will be a senior at Life Christian Academy in Tacoma in the fall…likes basketball, church activities and ‘being on the water.’…born January 25, 1989 in Tacoma.
Kevin Tway, 17, Edmond, Okla. (2nd Junior Amateur)
Won the 2005 U.S. Junior Amateur, 5 and 3 over Bradley Johnson on his 17th birthday…says winning the Junior is his most memorable golf experience…did not qualify for match play at the 2005 U.S. Amateur…is the oldest player in the field as he turns 18 on Sunday…hole-in-one at age 10 in 1998…also lists wins at the 2006 Oklahoma State HS Class 6A championship and 2006 Oak Tree…junior golf All-American…2006 Oklahoma Player of the Year…all-city, all-conference and all-region in 2006…golf team won 2006 Oklahoma State title…runner-up at 2005 Oklahoma Class A championship…son of 1986 PGA Championship winner Bob…will be a senior at Edmond North HS in the falll…committed to play college golf at Oklahoma State…doesn’t like to wear anything red or use red tees…but likes to shoot hoops…born July 23, 1988 in Edmond, Okla.

U.S. Junior Amateur
PAR AND YARDAGE – Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club is set at 6,936/6,923 yards and par is 36-36—72.
THE ARCHITECT – Max Behr, a disciple of Dr. Alister Mackenzie, designed the golf course, which opened in 1927.
COURSE SET UP:
Fairways –Cut to approximately ½ inch
Tees -- Cut to 4/10 inch
Intermediate rough -- Cut to 1 inch. 6 feet wide
Primary rough – Cut to 2 ½ inches
Putting greens – USGA stimpmeter reading at 10-10 ½ feet
Collars and run-off areas around putting greens – Cut to 4/10 inch (width varies)
Fairway width – Approximately 30 yards on most holes
The Championship setup results in a USGA Course Rating of 74.6 and a Slope Rating of 135.
ENTRIES – A total of 3,174 entries were accepted for the 2005 championship. The championship is open to male amateur golfers who will not have reached their 18th birthday on or before July 22, 2006, and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 6.4. Entries close June 7.
THE SCHEDULE – Following 36 holes of stroke play (July 17-18), the field will be trimmed to the lowest 64 scorers, who will advance to match play. From there, the schedule is as follows:
July 19 (Wednesday) – First round, match play
July 20 (Thursday) – Second and third rounds, match play
July 21 (Friday) – Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, match play
July 22 (Saturday) – Final round, match play (36 holes)
FREE ADMISSION – Spectators are invited to attend the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship free of charge.
ENTRIES: The USGA accepted 3,267 entries to the 2006 championship. This is the 11th consecutive year that entries have topped 3,000. The largest entry was 4,508 in 1999.
