Eldrick (Tiger) Woods, 16, of Cypress, Calif., became the first person to win two Junior Amateur titles when he defeated Mark Wilson, 17, of Menomonee Falls, Wis., 1 up, in the final at Wollaston Golf Club, in Milton, Mass.

Four players previously had appeared in two Junior finals, but Woods became the first multiple champion in the 48-year history of the championship.

Woods led the field into match play with a 36-hole total of 1-over-par 143, four strokes better than Wilson. It was the second consecutive year Woods had earned medalist honors.

When he won his first Junior title, Woods had only two matches reach the 18th green en route to his berth in the final. In advancing to the championship match at Wollaston, no match went as far as the 17th hole as Woods won once at the 11th hole, once at the 12th, and twice by 4-and-3 margins.

In the semifinals he eliminated Jonathan Bartlett, 15, of Ocala, Fla., 3 and 2. Wilson won his semifinal, 5 and 4, over Todd Lynch, of Winston-Salem, N.C.

In the final, Wilson won the first two holes with pars and maintained a 2-up lead with five holes remaining. Woods evened the match by taking the 14th and 16th holes, and both players made par 3s at the 17th.

At the final hole, a 421-yard, uphill par-4, Woods and Wilson each found greenside bunkers with their long-iron approach shots.

Wilson's shot from the bunker was short of the green, and his 14-foot putt for bogey stopped inches short of the hole. Woods blasted out safely to the back of the green, then two-putted for bogey and the win.
