Seventeen-year-old
David Duval defeated Austin Maki by one hole at Singing Hills Golf and
Country Club, in El Cajon, California. From Ponte Verde Beach, Florida,
Duval consistently outdrove his opponents by 20 to 40 yards. His drive,
on the par 5 eighth hole was measured at 331 yeards, leaving him only
a 5 iron to the green.
He birdied
the hole and defeated Chris Riley, 3 and 2, in the semifinals. A fast-paced
player, Riley played one match in 1 hour 50 minutes, and another in 2
hours 15 minutes.
Duval fell
behind Maki in the final by bogeying the first hole, pulled even on the
11th hole, and took the lead for the first time with a birdie on the 14th.
Maki dropped two holes behind on the 15th when Duval hit a remarkable
recovery shot over trees to within eight feet of the hole and two-putted
for par.
Duval slipped
just once on the closing holes before parring the final hole to preserve
his victory.
