Tim Straub, 16, of Orchard Park, New York, won the Junior Amateur Championship, 1 up, over John Mahon, of Glendora, California, on the Old Course of Saucon Valley Country Club, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Runner-up in the 1982 Championship, Straub thus became only the fourth player to reach the final twice.

The others were Mason Rudolph (1949-1950), Eddie Pearce (1968-69), and Mike Brannan (1971 and 1973). Straub qualified for match play with a 149 total, three strokes behind medalist Anthony Adams, of Toronto, Canada, who shot rounds of 74-72-146. Adams was eliminated in the second round by Robert McNamara, of Frankfort, Kentucky, 2 and 1.

In the quarter-finals, Straub faced Bob Estes, of Abilene, Texas, whom he had defeated in the 1982 quarter-finals. Straub played the last 11 holes even par to win 4 and 2. Although Straub bogeyed four of the first seven holes of the final match, he held a 1 up lead. The most exciting moment of the match came at the 604-yard par-5 15th, where Mahon holed a winding 50-foot birdie putt, and Straub matched it with a four-footer of his own.

Mahon won the 17th when Straub played a weak recovery from a greenside bunker. Only 1 up, Straub closed out the match with a par on the 18th. The Junior Amateur attracted 1,816 entries.
