Brett Mullin, a big 6-foot-4, 195-pound, 17-year-old from Riverside, became the fourth Californian in the past five years to win the Junior Amateur and the 12th in the Championship's 28 years. He defeated Scott Templeton of Willington, Kans., 2 and 1, at the Richland Country Club, Nashville, Tenn.

Gary Pinns, of Lombard, Ill., was medalist with 72-68-140. He lost to Mullin on the 19th hole in the semi-final round. The other losing semi-finalist was Rob Brewster, of Orchard Lake, Mich., whom Templeton defeated, 4 and 3. Templeton, only 15, was playing in his first United States Junior Amateur Championship, and he held a 2 up lead over Mullin after nine holes of their scheduled 18-hole final match.

Mullin pulled even by winning the 12th with a bogey and the 14th when Templeton three-putted. Mullin won the 15th and 16th to go 2 up, and the match ended when they halved the 17th. There were 1,898 entries filed, the highest number sine 1963, when there were no limitations on handicaps. Now an entrant cannot have a USGA handicap of more than eight strokes.
