John Crooks,
17, of Winston-Salem, N.C., became the second Easterner in three years
to win the Junior Amateur Championship. He defeated Andy North, 17, of
Madison, Wis., 2 and 1, at the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, Tulsa,
Okla.
North was
6 down to Crooks after nine holes of their 18-hole final. He then scored
birdies on four of the next seven holes and was 2 down playing the 17th.
They halved the 17th and Crooks won the match. Gary Sanders, the defending
Champion, lost his first round match to Tyler Chase, of Hamden, Conn.,
in 19 holes.
