1966
In the third
all-California final in the history of the Junior Amateur Championship,
16-year-old Gary Sanders, of Buena Park, defeated Ray Leach, of Novato,
2 up, at the California Country Club, Whittier, Calif. Sanders' margin
might have been bigger, but he committed a breach of the Rules by lifting
his ball to clean in twice on the 12th hole.
The Rules
at that time permitted a ball to be lifted for the purpose of cleaning
it only once on each green. Instead of winning the hole, he lost it, but
still won the Championship. Losing semi-finalists were Lanny Wadkins,
of Richmond, Va., and Tom Kite, Austin, Texas.
