The State of Washington produced its second consecutive Junior Amateur Champion in William L. Tindall, 17, of Seattle. He defeated Robert L. Hammer, 17, of Sarasota, Fla., 2 and 1, in the final. This followed the victory of Larry J. Lee, of Spokane, the previous year and marked the first time consecutive Champions had come from the same state.

The Championship was played at the Milburn Golf and Country Club, Overland Park, Kans. The entry reached a record 1,445; this was the 11th successive year in which the entry had increased. Both semi-final matches went extra holes for the first time. Tindall defeated Bruce Fischer, 15, of Manning, Iowa, 1 up in 19 holes; Hammer ousted Sherman Finger, III, 16, of Evanston, I'll., 1 up in 20 holes.

A 28-hole match won by Michael Eiserman, of Independence, Mo., over Patrick Honeycutt, of Memphis, Tenn., equaled the all-time USGA record for most extra holes in a match; George Von Elm and Maurice McCarthy, Jr., were the first to play 10 extra holes, in the 1930 Amateur Championship. Robert R. Kirouac, of Sharon, Mass., became the third player in history to play in five Junior Amateur Championships. He joined Jack Nicklaus and John Konsek in this select group.
