Gordon (Buddy) Baker, 17, a member of the Florence (S.C.) Country Club, played 17 holes in two under par to defeat R. Douglas Lindsay, 17, of Bethesda, Md., 2 and 1, at the University of Minnesota Golf Course, St. Paul, Minn. They were the survivors of another record entry of 1,117 boys.

In the semi-final, Lindsay beat Billy Womack, 17, at the 19th hole to avert an all-Florence final. Womack was also a member of the Florence Country Club and a classmate of Baker. Baker, John V. Barcello, III, 17, and David B. Lawrence, Jr., 17, of New Orleans, and Marion C. (Sonny) Methvin, Jr., 17, Little Rock, Ark., all qualified for the fourth year.

George Boutell, 14, of Phoenix, Ariz., was the youngest qualifier. Larry E. Beck had passed the age limit and was ineligible to defend. Ralph Mayerstein, 17, of Lafayette, Ind., won the consolation even with a 74 at the Minneapolis Golf Club.
