Kang
Earns Medalist Honors At 2003 U.S. Junior Amateur
Chevy
Chase, Md.
– Sung Hoon Kang, 16, of Korea, the only player in the field to
record two rounds under par, shot a 3-under-par 137 to earn medalist
honors at the 2003 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at the 6,575-yard,
par-70 Columbia Country Club.
The
two par-5 holes on the course, the 534-yard 5th and the 503-yard
12th , were the key for Kang – he birdied both each day. Kang is
playing in his first tournament in the United
States and has never before played match
play.
“He
was trying to make pars today to prepare for match play,” said his
coach, Young Lim, who serves as Kang’s translator. “The key is to
keep making pars.”
First-round
leader Patton Kizzire,
17, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.,
finished a stroke back after an even-par 70 gave him a two-day total
of 2-under-par 138.
Brian
Harman,
16, of Savannah, Ga.,
had five birdies and three bogeys in his round to shoot a second-round
2-under 68, and finished two strokes behind Kang at 1-under-par
139.
At
the 2002 Junior Amateur at Atlanta
(Ga.) Athletic Club,
Harman was leading eventual champion Charlie
Beljan
by two holes with three to play in the match-play quarterfinals,
but eventually lost in 21 holes. He came to this year’s championship
focused.
“I
had my heart broken last year,” said Harman. “I want to win.”
The
day’s low round was shot by Matt Savage, 16, of Louisville, Ky.,
who came back from an opening-round 83 to shoot a 4-under-par 66.
The highlight of Savage’s round was on the par-4, 325-yard 7th hole,
where he holed out from 100 yards with a sand wedge for eagle.
Savage’s
66 tied Columbia Country
Club’s competitive course record, held by five people, including
former PGA Tour Commissioner
Deane Beman.
“I
knew I could play this course, and I really didn’t have much to
lose,” said Savage .
Greg
Carlin, 17, of Kensington, Md., a member at Columbia Country Club,
shot an opening-round 75 but had an even-par 70 in the second round
to easily qualify.
The
two players in the field who have played in a U.S. Open – Tom Glissmeyer,
16, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Derek
Tolan,
17, of Highlands Ranch, Colo. – missed the cut. Tolan was one of
nine players vying for five spots in the playoff to advance to match
play.
The
first round of match play is scheduled for Wednesday, starting at
7:30 a.m. The second
and third rounds will be played Thursday, the quarterfinal and semifinal
matches on Friday, and the 18-hole championship final is scheduled
for Saturday, July 26.
The Junior Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually
by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are
strictly for amateurs.
