Chevy Chase, Md. – Medalist Sung Hoon Kang, 16, of Korea, struggled in his second-round match but was able to earn a 2-and-1 victory to advance at the 2003 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at the 6,586-yard, par-70 Columbia Country Club.

Playing against Matthew Leon, 16, of Canada, Kang fell behind after a double bogey on the par-4, 374-yard 1st hole. He squared the match with a birdie on the par-4, 459-yard second hole, and took the lead for good one hole later, on the par-4, 357-yard 3rd .

“He had an off-day, but we knew he wasn’t going to keep up playing so well the whole week,” said his coach, Young Lim, who serves as Kang’s translator.

Kang did continue his mastery of the two par 5s on the course, with birdies at the 534-yard 5th and 503-yard 12th holes. In four rounds, Kang has seven birdies and an eagle.

Lim said Kang is struggling with the mental part of his game more than his golf shots.

“He needs to try to focus more, and be more serious,” said Lim.

Jarred Texter, 17, of Lancaster, Pa., will face Kang in Wednesday afternoon’s third-round action after beating Bud Reynolds, 16, of Knoxville, Tenn., 4 and 3. Texter, playing in his fourth U.S. Junior Amateur, looks forward to facing this year’s medalist.

“Everyone is beatable, I’ll just have to play better this afternoon,” Texter said. “Maybe I can get a little bit of revenge – I was medalist last year and got knocked out in the first round.”

In other second-round action, Greg Carlin, 17, of Kensington, Md., a member at Columbia Country Club, was down four holes after 10 against Randy Lowry, 16, of Spring, Tex., but squared the match at the par-3, 160-yard 16th hole. Lowry came back to win the last two holes to earn a 2-up victory.

Will Osbourne, 17, of Wichita Falls, Kan., twice took a four-hole lead against Jon McLean, 17, of Weston, Fla., the son of famed teacher Jim McLean. McLean was able to battle back and extend the match to the par-4, 18th hole, but when the two matched pars Osbourne had a 1-up victory.

The third round of the U.S. Junior Amateur will be played Thursday afternoon and the quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Friday. The 18-hole championship final is scheduled for Saturday, July 26, at 9 a.m.

The Junior Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
