Rich Marik,
17, of Anaheim, California, won the Junior Amateur Championship by defeating
Tim Straub, 15, of Orchard Park, New York, 4 and 3, at the Crooked Stick
Golf Club, in Carmel, Indiana.
Marik became
the second player from Yorba Linda Country Club to win the Championship
in as many years; Scott Erickson won the 1981 Championship at Sunnyside
Country Club, in Fresno, California.
Tim Fleming,
of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was medalist with a 36-hole total of 144,
even par. He advanced to the third round, where he lost to Bill McDonald,
of Dalton, Georgia, 5 and 4.
The cutoff
score of 163 tied for the highest ever, it first was established in 1977
on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University. The USGA received 1,701
entries for the Championship, well short of the record 2,230 in 1963.
