The Junior Amateur Championship returned to California for the first time since 1966 as Aly Trompas, of San Diego, defeated Eddie Pearce, of Temple Terrace, Fla., 3 and 1, at the Spokane Country Club, Spokane, Wash. Pearce was attempting to become the first player in the history of the Championship to win twice. He is the second player ever to reach the final twice.

Mason Rudolph lost to Gay Brewer in the 1949 final, then won over Charles Beville the next year. Three times Trompas played spectacular recovery shots, winning one hole with a birdie and saving halves on the other two. Richard Monkman, of Wilmington, Del., was medalist with 146. Gregory Sheaves, of Salisbury, Md., and David Eger, of Charlotte, N.C., were the losing semi-finalists.
