John Miller,
17, of San Francisco, won both the qualifying medal and the Championship
at the Eugene Country Club, Eugene, Ore. It was the first time that the
Championship included stroke play qualifying at the site. The 64 low scorers
from a field of 150 survived for match play.
Miller's
qualifying scores were 71-68-139, three under par. Miller's opponent in
the 18-hole final match was Enrique Sterling, Jr., of Mexico City. Miller
won by 2 and 1. Sterling was the first foreign player to reach the final.
Greg McHatton, the defending Champion, lost in the quarter-final round.
A handicap
requirement of 10 strokes or better was introduced for the first time
and the total entry fell to 1,583 after the record entry of 2,230 in 1963.
