Charles S. McDowell, of Virginia Beach, Va., became the youngest winner of the Championship at 16 years one month, with his 2 up victory over Jay Sigel, 17, of Whitemarsh, Pa., at the Cornell University Golf Course, Ithaca, N.Y. McDowell replaced as youngest Champion Mason Rudolph, who was 16 years two months when he won in 1950.

During the final match, McDowell held a 2 up lead after nine holes, but Sigel won the next two holes to even the match. McDowell won the 13th hole with a par while Sigel missed a putt from two feet. After halving four straight holes, McDowell won the 18th. In the semi-final matches, McDowell defeated George Boutell, 17, of Phoenix, Ariz., 2 up, and Sigel defeated Bob Haldeen, of Sterling, Colo., 3 and 2.

The Championship drew a record entry of 1,885. Rain caused postponement of the first day's play so that the final was played on Sunday, August 6, rather that Saturday, August 5, as originally scheduled.
