Charles
S. McDowell, of Virginia Beach, Va., became the youngest winner of the
Championship at 16 years one month, with his 2 up victory over Jay Sigel,

N.Y. McDowell replaced as youngest Champion Mason Rudolph, who was 16
years two months when he won in 1950.
During the
final match, McDowell held a 2 up lead after nine holes, but Sigel won
the next two holes to even the match. McDowell won the 13th hole with
a par while Sigel missed a putt from two feet. After halving four straight
holes, McDowell won the 18th. In the semi-final matches, McDowell defeated
George Boutell, 17, of Phoenix, Ariz., 2 up, and Sigel defeated Bob Haldeen,
of Sterling, Colo., 3 and 2.
The Championship
drew a record entry of 1,885. Rain caused postponement of the first day's
play so that the final was played on Sunday, August 6, rather that Saturday,
August 5, as originally scheduled.
