The Championship
was held on the West Coast for the first time and was dominated by Southern
Californians. Foster (Bud) Bradley, Jr., 17, who played public links golf
at the Griffith Park Course in Los Angeles, defeated Allen L.
Geiberger,
16, of Santa Barbara, Calif., 3 and 1, in the final, over the North Course
of the Los Angeles Country Club. The losing semi-finalists were George
Warren, III, of Hampton, S.C., who had been runner-up the previous year,
and Henry (Phil) Lobstein, 15, of Brownwood, Texas, the youngest to progress
that far since Mason Rudolph in 1949.
Rex Baxter,
Jr., had passed the age limit and was ineligible to defend. The entry
rose to 747.
