Only Texter Breaks Par in First Round of Stroke Play

Duluth, Ga. – Only one player, Jarred Texter, 16, of Millersville, Pa., who fired a 69, broke par in the weather-delayed first round of stroke play at the 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club’s 7,008-yard, par-70 Highlands Course.

Texter, who is playing in his third Junior Amateur, was followed by six players at even-par 70 – Joseph Sykora, 17, of Daphne, Ala., Matt Harmon, 17, of Grand Rapids, Mich., Michael Baird, 17, of Castle Rock, Colo., Adam Porzak, 15, of Poway, Calif., Masaki Nakanishi, 17, of Japan, and Elliott Wainwright, 17, of Hillsborough, Calif.

While 149 scores were over-par, 15 players were within two shots of Texter at 70 or 71. Defending champion Henry Liaw, 16, of Rowland Heights, Calif., one of the 75 players who completed their first round on Wednesday, was among the nine players at 1-over-par 71.

Only 81 of the 156 players had completed their first rounds of stroke play before the championship was suspended Tuesday at 5:19 p.m. because of severe lightning and heavy rain that accumulated to ¾ inch. The first round, with 75 players still on the course, resumed at 7:30 a.m. and was completed at 10:02 a.m. As a result, the second round of stroke play was delayed by three hours and began at 10:30 a.m.

Texter, who won the North-South Junior at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina last week, made three birdies and two bogeys for his 1-under-par 69.

“It doesn’t surprise me that I shot under par but I thought a couple of other guys might shoot under par,” said Texter Tuesday. “But, it’s still early and the golf course is tough.”

With tangly Bermuda rough and fast and firm greens, the Highlands Course presented a steep challenge just as it did when it played to 7,213 yards and par 70 for the 2001 PGA Championship. For the most part, players opted for the ‘keep in play’ course management style.

“I had that attitude,” said Texter. “I hit a lot of drivers. I’m scoring now because of my driver. I hit driver on all par 4s and par 5s. For me, that’s not playing aggressive. Going after pins and going after putts is aggressive. I hit a lot of drivers but I played conservatively in my own right.”

Further evidence to the degree of difficulty of the course was that the average score in the field was nearly seven strokes over par at 76.57. Holes 10-18 played to an average of 38.83 and holes 1-9 averaged 37.74.

Sykora agreed with Texter’s approach, particularly after recording five birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey.

“You’ve got to keep it in the fairway,” Sykora said. “I only missed three fairways and I got in two fairway bunkers and that’s a lot better than the rough. If you get in the rough, you have to lay up – you’re done.”

Roberto Castro, 16, of Alpharetta, Ga., had the best day of the six Georgians in the field with a 3-over-par 73.

Chanin Puntawong, 15, of Thailand scored the first hole-in-one in seven years at the Junior Amateur with a 6-iron at the 183-yard 7th hole. The last previous hole-in-one was by Brady Stockton at the 1995 Championship at Fargo (N.D.) Country Club. Puntawong was a semifinalist in 2001. He finished with a 4-over-par-74 as did U.S. Open participant Derek Tolan, 16, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.

The field of 156 golfers will play two rounds of stroke play and the low 64 scorers will advance to match play beginning Thursday. Six rounds of match play will conclude with the 18-hole final match on Saturday afternoon.

The U.S. Junior Amateur, for golfers age 17 and younger, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
