Mathew Todd,
17, of Visalia, California, won the last three holes, two with birdies,
and defeated Dennis Hillman, 17, of Rye, New York, the medalist, 1 up
at Lake Merced Golf and Country Club in Daly City, California. Todd lost
four of the first eight holes.
A par at
the 12th hole pulled him to within 2 holes, setting the stage for a par-birdie-birdie
finish. The two were all square after 17 holes, and Todd played a 90-yard
wedge shot within three feet for a birdie. Hillman overclubbed into the
back bunker and conceded the hole.
Todd had
failed to reach match play in his first Junior Amateur, in 1989, and had
qualified in 1990 at 156, five strokes behind Hillman. He won his first
match 1 up, and his second went 21 holes. He defeated 17-year-old Adam
Thomas, from Baxley, Georgia, 3 and 2 in the semifinals.
Hillman,
meanwhile, was never extended to the 17th hole, and trailed only briefly
in five matches leading up to the final. He beat 14-year-old Tiger Woods,
of Cypress, California, in the semifinals.
