Charles Rymer, 17, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, defeated Gregory Lesher of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on the 19th hole at Brookfield Country Club in Clarence, New York. Michael Watson of Rockville, Maryland and John Tighe, Jr., of Lake Worth, Florida, were co-medalists at two-over-par 146.

Both lost their first-round matches. Rymer held a three-hole lead after eight holes of the final match, but lost the ninth through the 12th to Lesher and trailed by one. Lesher won the 16th with a par to go dormie, but Rymer won the 17th with a birdie and the 18th with a par to force the match to an extra hole.

On the 19th, after Rymer missed a seven-foot putt for par, Lesher conceded Rymer's short bogey putt, then Lesher missed his own putt for bogey. The USGA accepted 2,068 entries for the Championship.
