Rich Marik, 17, of Anaheim, California, won the Junior Amateur Championship by defeating Tim Straub, 15, of Orchard Park, New York, 4 and 3, at the Crooked Stick Golf Club, in Carmel, Indiana.

Marik became the second player from Yorba Linda Country Club to win the Championship in as many years; Scott Erickson won the 1981 Championship at Sunnyside Country Club, in Fresno, California.

Tim Fleming, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was medalist with a 36-hole total of 144, even par. He advanced to the third round, where he lost to Bill McDonald, of Dalton, Georgia, 5 and 4.

The cutoff score of 163 tied for the highest ever, it first was established in 1977 on the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University. The USGA received 1,701 entries for the Championship, well short of the record 2,230 in 1963.
