Madden Hatcher, III, of Columbus, Ga., ended the California domination of the Junior Championship by defeating Doug Clarke from La Jolla, 3 and 2, at the Hiwan Golf Club, Evergreen, Colo. California juniors had won four of the five previous Championships.

However, two Californians, Robert Clampett, of Carmel, and Andy Blossom, from Stockton, were co-medalists with 144. Losing semi-finalists were Steve Jones, of Yuma, Colo., who lost to Hatcher, 5 and 4, and Mike McGee, of Middletown, Ohio, who was eliminated by Clarke, 4 and 3.

Hatcher went 3 up on Clarke after the first four holes of the final match and never was caught. The entry reached 1,957, beating last year's figure by 59. This represents the highest number of entries since 1963.
