The Championship
continued to be exchanged between players from Florida and California,
when Michael Brannan, of Salinas, Calif., defeated Robert M. Steele, of
Dunkirk, N.Y., 4 and 3, at the Manor Country Club, in Rockville, Md. Brannan
succeeded Gary Koch, of Temple Terrace, Fla., as Champion.
The 1969
Champion was from California, and the 1968 Champion was from Florida.
Brannan was 15 years, 8 months of age when he won, the youngest Champion
ever. He won six matches, and in the 92 holes he played he was only 12
over par. In the final, Brannan won the first five holes and was 6-up
after nine holes.
Curtis Strange,
of Virginia Beach, Va., was medalist with 142. Michael D. Reid, of Aurora,
Colo., and John J. O'Neal, of Carmel, Ind., were the losing semi-finalists.
